We recently carried out a deep clean of the entrance and inner halls of Garnethill Synagogue in Glasgow. Both areas are laid with Victorian Geometric Encaustic floor tiles, with a unique six sided “Star of David” hexagonal tile at the core of the design.

This was the final stage in a major conservation and repair programme involving floor board and tile re-laying and replacement, work was scheduled and overseen by Page\Park Architects www.pagepark.co.uk who also secured a 50% funding grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

After several discussions a demonstration/test was carried out with both the client and the architect present. A schedule of work and method statement were then created that fitted with the clients request that there should be minimal disruption to the normal operation of the Synagogue, as there are regular school visits to both the Synagogue and the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre www.sjac.org.uk which is housed in the same building.

Work was carried out over two days using a combination of alkaline and acidic based cleaning products followed by pressurised warm water rinse and vacuum.
